What is Myth: The Wind Age?

Myth: The Wind Age is an ambitious project to build an advanced plugin for the computer game Myth 2. The goal is to test the limits of the Myth2 engine and introduce amazing new features and units to demonstrate the direction a new Myth game could head towards. The final products, single and multiplayer releases, will be used as part of a pitch to major gaming publishers to develop a new Myth game.

Why

Myth: The Wind Age concept art Everyone who has ever played Myth The Fallen Lords or Myth 2 will tell you that nothing else has ever come close. The unique gameplay, free online multiplayer service, and other addictive details were enough to get hundreds of us hooked. Naturally, the size of the community has dwindled from hundreds to dozens over time. A 10+ year old game, regardless of how unique it is, obviously isn't going to have the same appeal as newer games. Thus, new players are rather rare.

A game series like this deserves much better than the slow sad death it is currently suffering from. The potential was there previous to the release of Myth III. However, after Bungie was bought by Microsoft and the rights to the Myth series sold to Take-Two, things took a turn for the worse. The team (Mumbo Jumbo) behind Myth III, although being highly talented, were not Bungie- the company behind the original 2 Myth titles. They were also rushed to get the game completed so it could be shipped in time for the Christmas holiday. In the end, Myth3 did not get a warm reception by the community. It was buggy, didn't have the same Mythy gameplay we were all used to, and generally fell short of what we had all hoped for. In fact, the only upside to the game seemed to be the graphics. However, that aspect didn't mean much when the game wasn't fun to play.

So you have this project now, a few years later, attempting to essentially create what Myth3 should have been like. We all think there is a market in the PC gaming industry for another Myth title. We also believe success is possible if everything is done right with the proper support. We can't create the exact product that we'd like to with the current editing tools available to us, but we can still do a lot. We have ideas for highly-sought features. We have been working on writing a new storyline and developing fantastic new single player levels. There are an abundance of ideas for new multiplayer maps and gametypes. There are plenty of new unit ideas, drafts, and concepts. Our aim isn't to take the guts out of what made Myth so great, it's to emulate the successful formula and advance it to modern standards. From there, our hope is to gain the support of a willing publisher or investor to really make a new Myth game a reality.

Storyline

In the case of this project, our storyline is a prequel. With the Myth story, Bungie created their own world. They gave it various religions, races/creatures, heroes, and a whole lot of history. With some creativity on the part of Renwood and other team members, a story for our project has already been written and edited. We've only got the construction to worry about from this point.
